Great Bear Rainforest™ Essential Oils is a joint project between the Nuxalk Development Corporation and the Metlakatla First Nation.

Great Bear Rainforest Essential Oils

The Nuxalkmc peoples, collectively known as the Nuxalk Nation, are a small indigenous community of approximately 1300 individuals. The Nuxalk Territory is located on the central coast of British Columbia, within a steep sided valley of temperate rainforest also known as the Bella Coola Valley. Owned by members of the Nuxalk Nation, the Nuxalk Development Corporation has, since its inception in 2011, founded multiple business ventures that both align with Nuxalk values and benefit Nuxalk members.

The Metlakatla First Nation is 5 km Northwest of the City of Prince Rupert; the Metlakatla territory encompasses the Northern reaches of what is now known as the Great Bear Rainforest. The Metlakatla Stewardship Society operates a social enterprise which includes the Nation’s interest in the Great Bear Rainforest™ Essential Oils operations.

The mandate of the Stewardship Society is to engage in sustainable business ventures with the priority to provide meaningful employment without compromising the integrity of the environment.The goal of the joint essential oil venture is to provide long-term sustainable employment for remote communities, while preserving the pristine coastal region and its lush biodiversity. The oils are produced via steam distillation from conifer needles from salvaged or pruned tree boughs gathered within traditional Nuxalk and Metlakatla territory.

The oils not only represent an economic opportunity for the communities to generate income through a non-timber forest product but are also a way of sharing the aromatic and medicinal essences of this special region of the world. We are therefore proud to present to you Great Bear Rainforest™ Essential Oils’ selection of wildcrafted Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Lodgepole Pine and Western Hemlock therapeutic grade essential oils. We also made a special Rainforest synergy blend using these oils, so you can experience the Great Bear Rainforest in your own home. We are in a 50-50 profit share with the Great Bear Initiative, so every time you purchase an Essential Aura Great Bear oil, money is going back to the traditional territories whence these oils come.
